PSHE

What is PSHE?

PSHE stands for personal, social, health and economic education.

PSHE helps children and young people to be safe, healthy and prepared for life's opportunities. As part of a whole-school approach, PSHE Education develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to grow and develop as individuals and as members of families and of social and economic communities.

According to the National Curriculum, every school needs to have a broad and balanced curriculum that:

• promotes the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school;

• prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life;

• promotes British values.

From September 2020, primary schools in England also need to teach Relationships and Health Education as compulsory subjects.

How is PSHE taught at Prendergast Primary School?

All staff at Prendergast Primary School has every child’s wellbeing at heart and therefore will take any opportunity to

· help developing their sense of self-esteem and self-confidence, building their resilience and promoting personal health, both physical and mental.

· promote healthy relationships, where mutual respect and understanding of differences creates a safe and welcoming environment for all.

· inspire a sense of social responsibility through the discussion of social issues and the encouragement to participate in activities that raise social awareness.

· explain the importance of managing money, understanding the impact of making financial decisions and thinking about careers.

In doing so, we feel that a common approach with a shared language best supports each child in their individual growth as they progress through the school, while, at the same time promotes a whole school sense of unity and shared vision. Therefore, we have adopted the 1Decision scheme of work which, not only follows the Government’s statutory requirements, but it also supports children’s Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development and their understanding of British values.
